In ancient days , the place where this famous temple city is covered with dense forest. This forest is said to be Gnanaranyam[ forest of wisdom . Hence in this forest many saints and maharshis came for meditation. At that time one maharshi named Athri and his wife Anasuya lived in that forest.Anasuya was a respectable and lovable lady .she was so trusty ,believable and frank to her spouse. She was the only lady in that place who considered her husband as god .Maharshi Naradha once told about Anasuya ‘s respect& love towards her spouse ,to the Goddess Lakshmi, Parvathy and Saraswathy. They felt jealous of her and sent their husbands [ Shiva, Vishnu,Brahma] to test Anasuya. Husbands also decided to test Anasuya make her greatness known to their wives and the world.
The Thrimurthys came to anasuya’ s ashram as grand old man and begged.Anasuya was kind and help ful to all beings. At the time when she began to serve food, they wanted her to serve nackedly. She was surprised and she requested them to relieve from their wants. They did not accepted and finally she think her husband in her mind and start to meditate .In her meditation she came know that old men were the Thrimurthys and with the water which she washed her spouses feet sprinkled on the old men ‘s head. Now they became small babies and she took them and feed them well.
Maharshi Athri came back from Himalayas she told him all the incident and he was happy to see the Thrimurthys were lying in the cradle of pearls.Days passed. The Goddess were in search of their husbands who went to Gnanaranyam and by Naradha they came to know the incident and came to the ashram and requested with Anasuya to relieve back their husbands.Anasuya accepted but the three babies seemed to be same and goddess could not find their husbands . With the help of ‘’Athiparasakthi ‘’ the babies were known and became Thrimurthys. This Athi parasakthi is dedicated to the temple in the north of theppa kulam as ‘’. MUN UTHITHTHA NANGAI’.This Thrimurthys according to Athri&Anasuya , blessed them and her virginity is honoured and said they will be banniyan tree in krithayug, thulsi in threthayug , vilvam in dwaparayug and charakontrai in kali yug. Now this is kali yug and this kontraitree is seen in suchindrum temple.
More than 500 years ago this forest and the surrouding places where under the control of ‘’Shepherd lords’’ .Some of the rulers are Aay andiran, pootha pandiyan, Azhakiya pandiyan ,Nanjil valluvan and Veera narayanan. Today some of the places around Suchindrum are named after them.At that time there were many small villages and shepherds lived there . There main occupation is dairy farming and sheperd ladies sell the dairy products by walking through this forest.while walking one of root of the tree in that forest stuck the ladies daily . One day they planned to cut of the root and asked their shepherds to cut the root . When on the one strike on the root by the axe there was a flow of blood from the root and the shepherds came to find that there was three small stones seemed to be lingas and shepherds thought that it was God Thrimurthys . It was said that this thrimurthys arise at the time of great Anasuya. This lingas were found under chara kontrai tree. So the God is named to be "KONTRAI ADI NATHAR".Then the blood flows down to the tree and there arise another linga and it is considered as Moolasthanam and as "STHANUMALAYAN". It is said that this lingam is made by Devandran when he suffered from curse and prayed with it .Even today it is assumed that every daynight Indran came there and make poojas and it is said to be "Artha yama pooja".
Now this Sthanumalayan Sannathi is opposite to the Kontrai adi and placed downwards to it . The story of the shepherd lady is written and pictures were inscribed on the stone pillar in Chenbakaraman mandapam.
