Chennai, Dec 21: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today described his talks with Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanadan on the Mullaperiyar issue as a "forward movement".
Talking to reporters here on his return from New Delhi, where he had gone to attend the National Development Council meeting, Karunanidhi said he would not term his talks with his Kerala counterpart a "failure".
Karunanidhi said he had suggested to Achuthanadan that the Central Water Commission be asked to inspect the dam to assess the extent of seepage.
He said the Centre had agreed to give 300 mw of power additionally to the state from the Central grid to tide over the power shortage. He had asked for 500 mw, he said.
On the rain havoc in the state, he said 49 persons had lost their lives in rain-related incidents and the families of the victims had been given a solatium of Rs 1 lakh each.
The administration has been asked to take up relief measures on a war-footing and he had directed ministers to monitor relief operations personally.
Standing crops in over 82,000 hectares have been submerged in the floods caused by the incessant rains, he said. (Agencies)
