Kerala plans to ban mobile phone in schools: Minister
Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 5: Kerala Education Minister M A Baby today said the government was thinking of banning mobile phones in schools in the state.
However, a final decision in this regard would be taken only after having discussions with all concerned, he told UNI. Mr Baby said the government had noted the consequences of using mobile phones by students in schools and a final decision on it would be taken only after having discussions with the Chief Minister, Home Minister and Health Minister.
Since some parents considered it as a status symbol and a necessity, the government could take a decision in this regard only after proper discussions, he added.
Mr Baby said he had asked the Education Department to probe the alleged body search on a Plus Two girl student by women teachers at a private school looking for a concealed mobile phone following a complaint. The girl later attempted suicide after consuming poison and admitted to the Medical College Hospital.
Though some alleged that the girl was forced to take such a step as the teachers had asked her to remove her clothes, the Principal said the teachers did not ask the girl to remove her dress nor was she searched by any male teacher.
The mobile phone is banned in many private schools in the state and stern action is being taken by the school management against those who bring the phone into class rooms.
